2) Frequently Asked Questions and Essential Information
(reading time: approx. 2 minutes)

2.1. Who Can Join
You do not need any technical knowledge but if you have some, you can put it to good use. You need to be comfortable using the internet and search engines and willing to work on average a few hours a week at times that suit you. You also need a computer and a broadband internet connection. We're not looking to recruit hundreds of partners - well not yet anyway! The current set of W3A partners are a dedicated bunch who recognise that achieving organic search rankings requires time and hard work, even with the huge leverage offered by our technology. Almost all successful partners end up with multiple W3A sites.

We're NOT suited to dabblers or 5 minute wonders.

Dedication is two-way - we're a friendly team and we hand-hold and support our partners at every stage and work with everyone from complete novices to experienced web developers and SEO practitioners. All of our partners influence the direction of the programme as it evolves. Depending on their backgrounds and existing businesses, some choose to have additional relationships with us over and above W3A : one ended up as a business partner, providing us with some outsourced staffing, another ended up as a Search Sciences client, a couple more are now also doing some retained work for us . . . .

2.2. Money
OK, so assuming you have one or more W3A sites on subjects of your choosing with plenty of product information, optimised for the search engines, with unique content and a constantly growing set of link partners. How do you get paid?

Each W3 Alliance site generates income in two ways. Firstly, when someone clicks on one of the products on the site and makes a purchase, a commission is paid. Secondly, adverts from one or more of the major advertising networks are placed at the top of many pages. When a visitor clicks on an advert, a percentage of the cost per click (CPC) paid to the advertising network by the advertiser is paid.

You can choose which of these income streams you would prefer (percentages vary but they are broadly speaking similar). We then help you to set up relationships with the relevant affiliate or advertising networks. YOU KEEP 100% OF THE AFFILIATE REVENUES OR ALL ADVERTISING REVENUES FROM YOUR ACCOUNT. All of your earnings go straight to your own account with the relevant affiliate or advertising network which you monitor and control yourself. You are paid directly by the affiliate or advertising network.

We get the revenues from the other source. Thus, for example, if you choose to take the affiliate revenues (commissions), we get the advertising revenue. If you choose to take the advertising revenue, we get the the affiliate revenues.

2.3. Where Will The Traffic Come From?
As you will have gathered by now, the W3A focus is on building sites that the search engines 'like' and which rank well for relevant search terms. The traffic will therefore come from 'natural' search - i.e. the non-paid search engine results. Over time, once you have a good understanding of the average value of a visitor to your W3A site/s, you may decide that it is also worth augmenting the traffic with a Pay Per Click (PPC) campaign.

2.4. How Long Will It Take To Start Generating Revenue?
There are a great many factors that will determine this. Some of your W3A sites may be sites that you have already created and may already have some degree of search engine ranking. Most are likely to be new - you can generally measure the time to generating traffic in months rather than weeks. The search engines are generally quite cautious these days - there are so many spammy sites launched with aggressive (and badly constructed) linking campaigns that there is an element of 'guilty until proven innocent' in getting the site ranked. The W3A sites do not employ any spammy or questionable techniques - we are doing things 'the hard way' as far as the search engines are concerned and the rankings should therefore come AND STAY over time.

2.5. And How Much?
Some sites generate hundreds of pounds a month, others tens. Again there are so many factors including the level of competition for relevant search terms, quality and volume of content, link partners etc. It is too early to give any kind of average for W3A sites so we would always advise our parters to be pessimisitic and assume that each site will end up generating them tens of pounds a month in revenue. But remember, once you have been through the up-front work on the site's content and links, there will be a much lower level of maintenance work (linking is an ongoing activity plus we will be adding more W3A features in the future such as users reviews, web logs etc.) so there is no real limit to the number of W3A sites you can have - just the amount of time you are willing to commit. Most W3A partners are likely to end up with 10 or more sites which should, over time, equate to a significant income.

2.6. Can I Use My Own Branding and / or My Existing Site?
Yes - this is more fully explained in section 3.

2.7. Can I Edit The Code And Add To My W3A Site/s?
Yes - if you are comfortable with web site development, there is no reason why you cannot add further pages to your W3A sites (e.g. static information pages or even a forum / chatroom / community / weblog etc.). This will add value to the site and should have a beneficial effect on its rankings and thus traffic and revenues. You will need to notify us of any changes so that we register them centrally. This will ensure that we don't accidentally overwrite any of your code changes during an upgrade.

2.8. Can I Add W3A Capabilities to My Existing Site?
Again yes. The W3A technology is modular and can be deployed as separate elements. There are a good many factors here, beyond the scope of this document and each requirement needs to be treated differently.
